Medical Examinations

Sometimes you will be asked to have a medical examination for visa, insurance, licensing or other purposes. All are different and have differing requirements, but generally take time that the NHS does not have. Ask us and we can see if we can help.

Continuity of Care

We try as far as is possible to ensure that you see or are replied to by the same clinician every time.

How does a medical examination work?

The authority requesting the examination will usually have a form to be completed. We would ask that you send this to us so that we can work out whether we can help and what needs to be done. Requirements vary greatly.

Can You Offer An Occupational Health Assessment?

Yes. Dr Pickles is also registered as an occupational health consultant. Please clarify what it is you need as we may not be able to offer a few very specialist assessments.

Some authorities and particularly the DVLA require the doctor completing the form to have sight of your personal health records. Your NHS GP will need to supply a summary of the computer record if this is the case.

Some examinations require blood and/or urine tests to be taken. These are sent to their designated laboratory and we do not get the result back.

Yes but we do need to check your specific requirements.

What can we help with?

We can offer medicals for visa requirements for many but not all countries.

We can provide medicals if requested by insurance companies, statutory authorities (such as the DVLA) some sporting bodies and many others. Each will have very different requirements. Some can be done by the GPs, others will need Dr Pickles as an Occupational Health consultant and others we may have to decline because we do not carry the necessary equipment, training or authorisation.

Experienced GP's

Our GPs are fully qualified and all have years of experience. Medicine covers many areas, and no one can know everything. There are unknowns and gaps in the data. We will tell you when we cannot answer a question.

We then talk together as expertise is shared within the team and will research issues that we are less sure of.

Can I eat before I come?

Generally yes unless the medical specifies a fasting blood test.

You should always have had enough fluid iintake as most examinations will require you to pass a urine sample and some will need a blood test. Both are easier if you are not dehydrated.

Certainly, but they may be asked to wait in the waiting room for some or all of the consultation.
It depends on the complexity of what we are being asked to do but 45 minutes is common.
Probably as an element of physical examination is usually required. Intimate examination is however highly unusual.
