Making a Decision

You choose which the option you would like to follow and we will help you to make decision that is informed and right for you.

What Women's Health Services do we offer?

We offer a range of common procedures, from coil fitting for contraception to impants for HRT.

Intrauterine Device (Coil) Fitting

We can fit an intrauterine device in St Erme, and both Nuffied hospitals.

Coils can be used for emergency and long-acting contraception, managing heavy bleeding and as part of an HRT regime. Your requirements and background health will help to direct choice.

We would talk to you beforehand to ensure that it was being used appropriately. We would ensure that you know how it works, how well it works and potential side effects and risks. We would check your risks of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection.

You would be allowed to choose whether you do or do not want a local anaethetic and the choice of device would be agreed.

After the procedure we would make sure that you are well before allowing you home.

If an ultrasound confirms that your device is in place but we simply cannot see the strings, we would usually be able to remove it.

You are likely to need a local anaesthetic to help the tissues relax.

We can both place and remove Nexplanon, the progestogen only contraceptive implant.

Estradiol implants are available, though not licensed, and are used as an option of last resort when nothing else is effective.

They are small crystalline pellets placed into the fat of the lower abdomen. This requires a minor surgical procedure. They can release for 2-3 years but usually need topping up at 6-12 months. Blood levels are needed before a decision to repeat is made.

They are not generally available as an NHS option.

Small cervical polyps can be removed and sent for a laboratory check.

Do not suffer in silence – do something about that health problem that has been niggling for a while. Take stock of your health and look at what you can do to improve things now and reduce risks for the future. Do not assume that because you have a long term health issue that nothing can be done to help other problems that are affecting how you feel and what you can do.

Experienced GP's

Our GPs are fully qualified and all have years of experience. Medicine covers many areas, and no one can know everything. There are unknowns and gaps in the data. We will tell you when we cannot answer a question.

We then talk together as expertise is shared within the team and will research issues that we are less sure of.
